The law enforcement authorities in El Salvador have conducted a raid on office of law firm Mossack Fonseca in Colonia Escalon on Saturday in connection with the "Panama Papers" leak.
Mossack Fonseca, which is the law office behind the "Panama Papers", was allegedly moving from the location. Officials said that the Mossack Fonseca sign was removed a day earlier and an employee indicated that the company is planning to move out. The police officials seized documents and computer equipment from the company's El Salvador office located in Colonia Escalon.
El Salvador Attorney General Douglas Melendez's office said in a tweet that raid was conducted on Saturday and confirmed that some documents and computer equipment were seized by the authorities. Reports have indicated that the company has helped clients with money laundering, evading tax using offshore companies and bypassing sanctions.Mossack Fonseca has denied any wrongdoing in the cases.
Around 11 million documents were leaked form the Panama based law firm to German newspaper SueddeutscheZeitung and were also shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Reports showed that the source of the leak is yet to be identified. The massive leak of 11.5 million records has shocked many around the world as it includes accounts belonging to world leaders and a rangeof international criminals.
"Nothing in this illegally obtained cache of documents suggests we've done anything wrong or illegal, and that's very much in keeping with the global reputation we've worked hard to build over the past 40 years of doing business the right way," Mossack Fonseca said in a statement.
