Honda revamps its top-selling Civic compact car for the third time

Honda revamps its top-selling Civic compact car for the third timeBarely one year after overhauling its top-selling Civic compact car to address some initial shortcomings in the vehicle, Honda Motor has revealed in a recent announcement that the 2014 Civic is also a revamped model --- marking the third makeover of Civic in three years.

The 2014 Civic revamp essentially underscores Honda's efforts to sustain its dominant position in the US compact car market. The automaker is heading for record US sales this year, and apparently wants to keep the momentum going in 2014 as well.

According to Honda, the 2014 Civic will get a continuously variable transmission that is capable of boosting horsepower and fuel efficiency to 33 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

Among the interior changes coming to the 2014 Civic, Honda said that the car will feature a bigger touch-sensitive navigation screen that responds like a smartphone. The car also gets a camera - dubbed LaneWatch - which is integrated into the right passenger-side mirror, to make the driver aware of the objects and vehicles in the car's blind spot.

Talking about the 2014 Civic at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, Honda's US auto operations SVP Mike Accavitti said that Honda is "for the third straight year" bringing to market "an even better Civic." About the three successive Civic revamps, Accavitti said that the changes that have been brought aboard Civic reflect Honda's determination "to create something new and then immediately set about to make it better."
